Day 2 Log Report: a letter home from camp
Dear Mom, Dad and Rufus,
I am writing to you on Day 2 of camp. I am staying in Cabin 423 at Eberhard camp. We are just getting acclimated to everything here and the first day was a lot of formalities and getting to know you and such. The weather here hasn’t been that great. Today is worse than yesterday. It is rainy and humid. One of the girls, Cathy, was complaining that she shouldn’t have bothered to straighten her hair today ( I’ve heard from the other girls that she is kind of an overachiever). We watched Amy’s hair do some magic yesterday as it kept growing bigger and bigger throughout the day. Maybe that will be Cathy’s hair today. Guess the battle of the growing hair is on! Oh wait, Amy just walked in and it looks like she is not messing around. She has her hair pulled back today.
Mom and dad, I know you warned me about drinking too much coffee, but I am not sure it can be helped her. People drink coffee here like its their business. As soon as a pot is made, it gets emptied. I feel like its just something you do here to fit in. Breakfast was greta with coffee, yesterdays leftover and these amazing fresh berries that Trisha brought. They were delicious! During breakfast time old campers came back to say hi to the leaders. It was like one reunion after another. It seems that everyone loves it here. It’s almost a little too weird. After all the old campers left for their own camp, the leaders started by covering the most important responsibilities that were coming up - snacks, logs and demos. It is funny that snacks are first because these people sure like to “break bread together” as they have mentioned in the information meeting before we signed up. The resources here aren’t too great either. We started a list of all the broken things yesterday and the list keeps growing and its only the second day! It will be interesting to see if anything works by the end of camp.
We started a conversation yesterday about our purpose and we continued that conversation talking about audience. Then we went into what they call “sacred writing time” where everyone spreads out over the entire campground to write on their own. We came back together and met another past camper, Kerrie DeBoer, who drank way too much coffee. She zipped and zapped and zoomed her way into our room and started bouncing all over the place and talking a million words a minute. She had us play a game where we had to put a story in order. It was fun and I believe we completed the activity in record time in comparison to Kerrie’s kidlets. We were told to choose our favorite piece from the game and take it back to our seats. Everyone walked around to carefully choose their favorite one, but these two girls, Grace and Cathy, torpedoed to get their hands on their favorite one. It was really funny because after Grace grabbed her piece, she questioned why so eagerly ran to pick up that specific one. I think she just wanted to be the first one. And Cathy, the overachiever, had her eyes set on one and she wasn’t going to let anyone else walk away with it. I think her hair has gotten a little bigger since the morning.
Kerrie told us to write haikus inspired from the pieces we picked up. Even before Kerrie was finished telling us what a haiku was, Cathy had already finished two lines of her three line poem. None of us are too surprised. Kerrie is so cool! She brought us presents and she let us choose where we can write. I didn’t understand the paper we got. They had funny lines on it. Amanda explained the paper to me and told me which lines to write on and which lines to write through. It is so confusing. I wrote my haiku and drew a picture with all my colorful pens. Our leader Susan is a little scary. She wrote about a rooster and how she wanted to kill the rooster and eat it. I think she was joking, but she has a little dark side to her. She tried to cover up her weirdness by writing about letting the rooster live, but I think she really wanted a taste of that rooster.
Some of these girls talk about weird things. Catherine warned us to “watch out for Grace.” Grace likes to talk about some inappropriate things, but its really funny. Catherine isn’t so innocent herself. She has these bright sassy purple nails. You know what that means…
It seems like no one is safe sitting next to Grace. The other counselor, Kari, was sitting next to Grace and they were talking about some naughty things. I don’t think Grace means any harm. She likes to talk about these things, but I don’t think she’s a “bad girl” even though I heard that she stole something yesterday. But it seems that karma got her because she ended up locking herself out of her room.
We were supposed to go out on a picnic lunch, but the weather made us postpone it for hopefully tomorrow. We split up into different groups for lunch today. I brought a lunch I prepared which was good, because the only place open to get anything for lunch was the coffee place. Some of the other girls went off the campground to a place called Freshii and I heard they got lost and that it was the counselor’s fault for giving them bad directions. Oops! But it looks like they found it alright.
After lunch we had to wait to get back into our room. They lock the room up for lunch so we had to wait for the security guy to unlock the door. You know those Greek yogurts you love? This girl Jessie is allergic to them. She had puffy lips for three days. When she was telling the story, I thought about the movie “Hitch” and how Will Smith’s character drank benadryl from the bottle. Cathy told us that she was allergic to bees, but not to the extent where she has to carry an epipen. Cathy also showed us these amazing croissants that she made. I am beginning to see the overachiever in her. Oh and you should have heard Susan’s Chef Ramsey impersonation. It was terribly awesome! We are all excited for Cathy’s snack day, because it seems like we will get plenty of goodies from her.
After lunch everyone went into this loopy mood when we were supposed to get into our writing groups. I overheard Cathy telling Grace about Nicholas Provenzano. We shared a moment over our Nerdy Teacher crush. I know Grace will join us. The groups tried to get focused, but then so many random conversations came up. I think Grace was talking about sex because I heard Kari say, “I bet its about ‘sex’ with Grace” and then Susan commented, “You share too much.” Then all of a sudden Vicky tells us a story about her email and how in trying to not draw attention from herself, she ended up drawing attention to herself. We know call her “Apelvic” - how hilariously unfortunate! That post-lunch work time was hard. Amy struggled to remember her glasses. Seems she wanted to work harder and not necessarily smarter. I think she ran into some other problems as I heard her say, “I think I need to go home. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.” I’m glad Amy stayed. Amy, Catherine and Jessie were in my writing group so we worked together in the afternoon. We read our stories and received feedback. I heard there were some issues on the second floor and that we are now banned from that area. I wonder what could have happened when Susan was there. It must have been bad.
Another past camper, Linda Berlin, came and she said it felt like “returning home.” Are you sure you didn’t send me away on a cult camp? These people talk the same and have this goofy sense about them. I mean Kari the counselor says things like “You’re the boss, applesauce” and none of them ever want to leave. Linda shared some really cool things with us. She taught us how to embrace challenges by telling us to not worry about the things we don’t know. She told us to focus instead on the things we did know. Sarah had so many questions for Linda that Linda pulled up a chair and conferences with Sarah about all the things that she wanted to know. They spoke their own nerd language for awhile and it was fun to overhear and see their passions matched in their engagement.
After Linda we had a time of sharing. We didn’t all share, but I have a feeling that we will all have to share. Sari shared a touching story about her final moments with her father before he passed away. It was beautifully written. Jessie then shared her piece about how much she loves her brothers. And finally Amanda shared a story about her honeymoon when her husband almost died because of sea bass. She is such a great story teller and its such a great story to tell. There are so many stories shared between us here. The stories have connected us and united us. The stories add to the strength of the group.
I am having fun at camp and I hope you can send me some sunshine and rainbows and take away the humidity. I love the people I am here with. They make everything into such an amazing adventure. I can’t believe we just finished our second day together. This summer is going to be a riot. Take good care of each other and I love you twenty times!
